What an AI cofounder for a store actually is
The phrase is everywhere and it means three different things. Here is the one we mean, and how to tell whether a product deserves it.

Search for the phrase and you get three products wearing the same name. Some are chat apps that answer questions about your business. Some are company-formation services that register an LLC and call the bundle a cofounder. A few are software that actually does part of the running. The word is doing a lot of work, so it is worth saying what we mean by it before we use it about ourselves.
A working definition
An AI cofounder for an ecommerce store is software that holds the whole business in view, does the recurring digital work without being asked, and brings the finished work to the owner for a decision. Each of those three parts rules out a lot of tools.
Holding the whole business in view means it knows the catalog, the margins, the stock levels, the past campaigns and the decisions the owner already made. A tool that starts from a blank prompt every time does not qualify, however good its writing is. The reason we built Vantage around one memory is that the useful work lives in the connections between facts, and a tool that only sees one tab cannot make them.
Doing the work without being asked is the difference between a helper and a partner. A helper waits. A partner notices the bestseller is nearly out of stock and pauses the ad that is selling it, or sees a product page losing people on phones and drafts the fix. Most of what a cofounder does, the owner never requested.
Bringing the work for a decision is what keeps the word honest. A cofounder does not have your signature. It drafts the price change, the campaign, the reorder email and the reply to a customer, and then it stops. Nothing publishes and nothing spends until the owner says yes.
Cofounder, agent or assistant
People search for all three, and the tools answer to whichever name sells best that month. The distinctions are real, though. An assistant answers when spoken to. Shopify's Sidekick is a good one, and if your whole store lives inside the admin and you enjoy the daily work, it may be all you need. An agent carries out a task from start to finish, such as handling a return or updating an order, usually one kind of task, and usually in customer support. A cofounder owns areas rather than tasks. Ads, listings, pricing, getting found, supply. It works across all of them with one memory, and it raises the work itself.
None of these is better in the abstract. They answer different questions. If the question is how to write this product description faster, you want an assistant. If it is how to stop answering the same support email, you want an agent. If it is who is going to run the marketing, the pricing and the listings while you make the product, that is the cofounder question, and it is the one Vantage exists to answer.
What it must never do
The boundaries matter more than the feature list, because they are what let an owner hand over real responsibility. Vantage never touches the physical side of a business. Making, packing and shipping stay with you. It never moves money on its own. And it never publishes or spends without approval, which is a rule in how the system is built rather than a setting to go and find. Customer support is drafts only. The owner presses send, every time.
A cofounder does not have your signature. It drafts, and then it stops.
How to tell a real one from a renamed chatbot
Five questions sort the field quickly. Does it remember a decision you made months ago without being reminded? Does anything show up in your queue that you did not ask for? Is every draft grounded in your real catalog and prices, or could it have been written for any store? Does each suggestion come with the reason and the numbers behind it? And is there one queue where you approve or send back, rather than six dashboards with six unread badges? A product that answers yes to all five is doing the job. One that answers yes to the first only is a very good notebook.
Where Vantage is on this
Vantage is being built as exactly this, in the open, area by area. It connects to the Shopify, WooCommerce or Etsy store you already run, learns it during onboarding, and then carries the six areas of the daily work behind one approval queue. It is in closed beta, free for the stores in it, and seats open in waitlist order. If you want to see how it reads a store before joining, the free audit runs the first step on any store address, with no account and no card.
You make the product. Vantage runs the store. That is the whole of the idea, and cofounder is the closest word we have found for it.
